What you'll accomplish
Consumer research reports pile up faster than any one person can read them: a quant study here, a set of interview notes there, a social listening export competing for the same two hours a week. NotebookLM lets you drop all of that into one notebook and ask questions across every source at once, so a synthesis that used to mean re-reading several long reports side by side becomes a single focused session.
What you'll need
What you should see: An empty notebook with a prompt to add your first source.
Before adding anything, open each research file and check for respondent names, email addresses, or specific home addresses in interview notes or survey verbatims. Strip or redact these, even if the file was labeled anonymized when you received it. Consumer research documents often carry identifying details that survived an earlier "anonymization" pass, and once a file is uploaded it's harder to walk back than it is to check first.
What you should see: A list of sources down the left side of the notebook, each one you can click to open individually. Troubleshooting: If you have more material than one notebook comfortably holds, split by topic (one notebook per product line, or per quarter) rather than piling everything into a single notebook.
Once sources finish processing, the chat panel shows a generated summary pulling from everything you uploaded.
What you should see: An answer that cites which source(s) it drew from, usually with a clickable reference back to the original document.
